Marilyn Monroe was sent to an orphanage when she was only nine years old.

This happened due to the mental issues her mother was battling with, her mother was hospitalised at the period this happened.

Going forward, throughout her childhood, she had a total 11 foster parents.

While many other children were experiencing teenage hood, Marilyn Monroe married her first husband, James Dougherty at the age of 16.

 

Close sources revealed she was “married off” by her foster parents because they saw her as a burden and did not want to be responsible for her.

The name Marilyn was chosen based on a stage actress in New York that time.

Marilyn asked to use her grandmother’s last name, Monroe.

On Monday, February 23, 1956, she made it her name official and legally changed her name to Marilyn Monroe.
