Federal high court in Abuja dismisses APC's certificate forgery suit against Obaseki

A federal high court sitting in Abuja on Saturday has dismissed a suit filed against Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State over certificate forgery.

The suit which was filed by the All Progressive Congress (APC) party and one of its members, Williams Edobor, on 14th July, 2020 has been dismissed by the judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed on the grounds that the plaintiffs lack evidence.

The suit filed against Mr. Obaseki was that he forged his Bachelor of Art in classical studies certificate which he submitted to the independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for his nomination as the gubernatorial candidate of the People Democratic Party ( PDP).

The Edo Governor was also accused of forging the O'level results he submitted. The plaintiffs claimed that Mr Obaseki only had three credits in Religious knowledge, History and Geography, without a credit pass in English language, that he failed to meet the minimum admission requirements of the University of Ibadan(UI). So, there was no way he could have been admitted into the University in 1976 and graduated in 1979.

The judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed said that "the plaintiffs relied on the photocopied documents presented by Mr Obaseki without a formal verification of the authenticity of the certificate from the University of Ibadan."

The judge added that the Deputy Registrar, Mr Abayomi Ajayi, of the University of Ibadan had given evidence that the university issued the certificate to Mr Obaseki.

According to the Deputy Registrar, the governor was duly admitted through direct entry in 1976 to study classical studies and he graduated in 1979.
