Update: Blizzard has blanketed large parts of Spain with snow putting activities on hold

An unusual situation occured in Madrid, A case whereby persistent blizzard has blanketed large parts of Spain with snow, freezing traffic thereby causing blockage  and  leaving thousands of people  trapped in cars,train stations and airports that had suspended all services due to the continual falling of  snow  on Saturday.

Madrid, the capital and other parts of central Spain for the first time activated red weather alert, the highest, and called in the military to rescue those  trapped on everything from small roads to the city's major thoroughfares.

AEMET  the national weather agency had warned that some regions would be receiving more than 24 hours of continuous snowfall due to the odd combination of a cold air mass stagnant over the Iberian Peninsula and the arrival of the warmer Storm Filomena from the south.

AEMET in their statement also said  "that up to 20 centimeters (nearly 8 inches) of snow could accumulate in large parts of the country but the build-up reached more than 50 centimeters even in urban areas". "The storm is expected to move northeast throughout Saturday," the agency said.

Head of the Madrid emergency agency Carlos Novillo, said that more than 1,000 vehicles belonging to citizens had become trapped, mostly in the city, majorly on the  ring road and the main motorway that leads from the Madrid to the south, toward the Castilla La Mancha and Andalucia regions.
Novillo made a statement on   Saturday morning  as viewed on social media.

 He also made an appealing statement- "We ask all those who remain trapped to be patient, we will get to you" 

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas International Airport operator AENA said that the main  gateway leading in and out of the country, would temporary be on close throughout the day after the blizzard bested workers and machines trying to keep the runways clear of snow

Also Renfe railway operator in his statement said, trains in and out the city including commuter routes and long-distance passenger train where all suspended 

Real Madrid team was also  unable to take off  its match against Osasuna on Saturday night.
