Six weeks old baby dies during baptism, Romanian Church under fire

A six-week old baby reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest during a baptism ritual in The Orthodox Church of Romania earlier this week.

The little baby was rushed to the hospital but died some hours later with autopsy traveling liquid in his lungs.

There is a pressure against the Romanian Church to change it’s baptism rituals as a manslaughter investigation has been opened by Prosecutors against the priest in the North-Eastern City of Suceava.

Over 56,000 signatures have been gathered on an online petition calling for a change in the rituals procedures.

There have been comments with the prosecution, such as: “The death of a newborn because of this practice is a huge tragedy”, “This risk must be ruled out for the joy of baptism to triumph”.

It is discovered that the church is the most trusted institution as more than 80% of Romanians are Orthodox.

Owing to similar events, church spokeman, Vasile Banescu had suggested that priest pour a little water babies faces instead of immersing infants three times in holy water, however Archbishop Teodosie, leader of the Church’s traditional wing, said the ritual will not change it’s format.
